Rugby World Cup - some simple security steps
Rugby World Cup - some simple security steps
If you allow the excitement of the Rugby World Cup to distract you from personal security you could pay the penalty with thieves stealing your prized trophies.
Police in Central District are urging rugby fans and visitors to New Zealand to take a few simple precautions to ensure they don't expose themselves to crime.
"It would be so easy when you get caught up in the spirit of a major event to forget the simple day-to-day things that keep us from being victims of crime," said Operations Manager Inspector Dave White. "A few minutes and a few precautions is all it takes to reduce the risk of a great game being ruined."
If you're heading out to enjoy the rugby:
• Check the facilities at each
venue in advance and only take to the ground what is
absolutely necessary.
• Don't carry large amount of
cash or other valuables with you and make sure you keep
valuables close to you and secure at all times.
• Do
not leave bags or other personal belongings unattended at
any time.
• Be aware and take notice of your
surroundings and who's around when you are walking or
sight-seeing.
• Try to go to places with someone you
know and trust.
• Avoid walking alone in isolated
places, particularly late at night. Stay in well-lit areas
where there are other people.
• Take a taxi or arrange
a pick-up.
• If you are in a bar, avoid accepting
drink from strangers and don't leave drinks unattended.
• Police do not recommend accepting rides or
hitch-hiking with strangers.
• Carry a mobile phone so
you are able to call for help if needed.
Protecting your accommodation and vehicles:
• Always lock doors and
secure windows of accommodation and vehicles and set house
alarms.
• Don't leave valuables in vehicles. If you
must leave anything behind make sure it is out of sight and
securely stored.
• Don't leave important documents in
vehicles such as passports, and make copies of all
documentation, storing the copies separately from the
originals.
• Don't leave maps, luggage or anything
else that indicates you are a visitor on show.
• Move
vehicle gadgets out of sight such as GPS systems and
hands-free kits.
• If you are travelling by campervan,
always try to park overnight in holiday parks, DOC camping
grounds or other specially designated area. If you are not
familiar with the area ask at the nearest i-SITE.
• Park in secure car parks where possible.
• Hand your room key to reception, rather than carry
it with you.
