On The Trail Of Happy Feet
Each class in New Zealand has a chance to plot on a map where they think Happy Feet will be on 23rd October - 50 days after he was released to sea.
The class with the closest guess will win a mould of Happy Feet's feet made by Weta Workshop.
The competition can be entered online at www.OurFarSouth.org.
"School children are so enrapt in Happy Feet's story, we should be harnessing their interest and teaching them about our precious resources south of New Zealand - the Antarctic" says Gareth Morgan.
The website also provides ideas on how to incorporate the competition into lessons. "Children can get a lot from this Happy Feet competition," says Gareth, "they can learn about co-ordinates on a map, habitats, geography, you name it!"
In February 2012 Gareth and a team of experts are heading to Antarctic and the sub Antarctic islands to highlight the issues plaguing that area, namely climate change, biodiversity, and its precious resources.
This competition is only one of the initiatives that Our Far south is undertaking to engage school children. Others will include a blog aimed at children, speakers at schools, and lesson plans on line.
