Community ‘Clubs’ together to show support for Whenua Iti.
To celebrate its 25 year history, outdoor learning centre Whenua Iti is hosting an afternoon of golf at the Motueka Golf
Club on Sunday September 25th.
The special fundraiser aims to encourage anyone who’s considered playing golf to give it a go.
For an entry fee of just $5 per person, with children under 12 free, the nine holes are played in teams of 3, under
Ambrose tournament rules, with a minimum of one golfer in each team.
The event has been organised by Anne Grantham and Catharine Wood with the aim of making it accessible and fun for the
whole community.
“You don’t have to have played golf before so it’s a fantastic chance to give it a go in a fun environment and know
you’re supporting Whenua Iti’s youth programmes at the same time,” says Catharine Wood, Whenua Iti’s Development and
Communication Manager.
Families are welcome and there will be prizes and the raffle drawn at the end of the nine holes, at around 4.15pm.
Motueka Golf Club has shown its support for Whenua Iti by donating the use of the nine holes for free, allowing Whenua
Iti to fundraise with the small entry fee. Clubs and trundler hire is $10.
Whenua Iti Manager Michelle MacNeil says the Whenua Iti tournament reflects the spirit of the organisation.
“We have created this event to bring people together, so that they can try something new and have a good time doing it.
There’s absolutely no pressure and we encourage families to come along and just have a go. It’s going to be a great
afternoon and it’s nice for Whenua Iti and its supporters to celebrate 25 years on the 25th of September too!,”
It is 25 years since Whenua Iti was registered as a charitable trust and began teaching outdoor skills with a few
courses on the Moutere site, donated by founder Hazel Nash.
Since then, Whenua Iti Outdoors can boast having challenged more than 20,000 people on their range of courses which use
the outdoors and the natural environment to develop confidence and life skills for everyone from troubled youth to
business people wanting to team build.
