Sisters bring competitive edge to Uni Snow Games
Wednesday August 31: Charlotte Newbold might have given up high performance skiing at an international level, but she hasn’t lost her
competitive edge and, with her sister Frances, the duo have been carving up the slopes at this week’s Uni Snow Games in
Wanaka.
The Queenstown sisters are representing Otago University at this week’s Games in Wanaka and are making sure their
university is well-represented on the results table.
Charlotte has won every event she’s entered – the Giant Slalom on Sunday, the Skier Cross on Monday and today’s
(Wednesday 31 August) Parallel Slalom, while Frances has placed third in all three events as well.
Charlotte, 20, has been ski racing competitively since she was 10-years-old. She was a member of the New Zealand women’s
ski team and raced in Europe, but injuries and a desire to focus on her studies led to her withdrawal from the national
team last year.
Frances, 18, stopped competing when she was in Year 11 but before then was a member of the Queenstown Alpine Ski Team
and was selected for a national development team.
The sisters agree this week’s Uni Snow Games has been a great chance for them to get some more competitive skiing in.
“It’s been really good, really fun,” Charlotte said.
“I couldn’t compete at last year’s event, as we had nationals at the same time, but this year it’s been really good to
represent Otago University.”
“The courses have been really good.”
While both say they are more ‘recreational’ skiers now, they admit they still have a competitive streak.
“When we were younger we were really competitive, but we both decided to do other things – we are definitely still
competitive though,” Frances said.
University Sport New Zealand National Events Manager Peter McDonald said it was great to have competitors with
international ski racing experience on the slopes for the Uni Snow Games.
“It’s great to see competitive skiers being active among their universities – they are setting a really good standard
for their team mates and fellow competitors,” he said.
The Uni Snow Games continue tomorrow (Thursday September 1) with the slope style at Treble Cone.
