Make the most of Father’s Day

31 August 2011

Make the most of Father’s Day

Relationship Service is urging New Zealanders to make the most of Father’s Day this year.

“And that doesn’t mean buying expensive gifts,” says Chief Executive, Jeff Sanders says.

If you are thinking of what to give the father in your life this Father’s Day, the best thing you could do is to take the time to show them how important he is in your life.

“Father’s Day needn’t be about expensive gifts. If you live in the same area spend some time together. If you don’t live nearby let him know you are thinking of him.

“And for fathers, Father’s Day provides us with the opportunity to think about what kind of a Dad we want to be.

It’s an opportunity to think about how we want to be remembered by our children and to show the next generation what it takes to be a great Dad. The fathers of today are raising the parents of the future,” Mr Sanders says.

Fathers may want to think about the following ways to be a great Dad:

• Put your children’s interests first
• Always make time for your children
• Show your affection, including lots of hugs
• Have fun with your children
• Share the parenting duties and household chores
• Read to your children
• Praise your children, show them that you are proud of them
• Respect their mothers
• Never smack your children – violence is never okay
