Contemporary dance's next generation on show at Unitec

Contemporary dance's next generation on show at Unitec

The arrival of Spring coincides with Unitec department of performing and screen arts's annual contemporary dance season. Choreofest 2011: Te Mahuru (Spring) Contemporary Dance Season is a stimulating dance triptych of unique and innovative student works performed by students of Unitec's dance programme.

"These exciting works offer a fresh and varied perspective on art, life and performance through their eyes," says Unitec's dance curriculum leader, Charene Griggs.

Choreofest has grown into one of the most anticipated events on the contemporary dance calendar. Audiences get a glimpse at the next generation of dance talent emerging from New Zealand's leading contemporary dance and choreography programme.

The three-part performance season opens with their first year Unitec dance students in Choreofest Tahi, which runs from 7-10 September. This group is one of the most ethnically diverse year groups Unitec has had, a reflection of New Zealand's increasing multiculturalism and the growth of the contemporary dance form among young Maori and Pacific.

The second year students perform in Choreofest Rua from 21-24 September before the final year Unitec dance students bring the curtain down in Choreofest Toru on 5-8 October.

"Contemporary dance enthusiasts should not miss this season of Choreofest," adds Ms Griggs. "Dance is always evolving and our students are a barometer of that with their creativity and fresh approach towards their art form."
