LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER WINS AT NATIONAL AWARDS
Cromwell photographer Janyne Harman received a bronze medal at the prestigious national awards in Rotorua on 8 August.
“I was thrilled to win a bronze award as the standard of work is incredibly high and challenges how I think about and view photography. Being part of the Iris awards and the working with the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers is a vital part of my professional learning and development” said Ms Harman.
The awardwinning photograph was of local farming and business identity Tom Pinckney in the yards at Northburn Station. “I was at Northburn doing a commercial shoot for the CODC when we had about two minutes of beautiful golden light that lit up the scene and showed Central Otago at its absolute best but I had to be quick!”
The Epson/New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP) Awards attract hundreds of entries from around the country and overseas each year. The awards are highly contested and coveted as they have helped launch and establish many careers.
All the entries are judged anonymously over three days by a panel of judges who include some of the most qualified and renowned local and international photographers.
“The awards give photographers an opportunity to push the boundaries, and to see how their work is judged against the rest of the industry,” said NZIPP President Craig Robertson. “As a result, the bar keeps getting raised higher and higher and this year was no exception.”

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER GAINS PRESTIGIOUS QUALIFICATION
Cromwell photographer Janyne Harman has recently achieved qualified professional status in commercial photography with the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP).
NZIPP qualifications are highly regarded and are recognised across the world as a benchmark of excellence. The Qualified Professional Status or 'Q" is achieved by submission for peer review by a panel of highly qualified assessors.
“It was pretty nerve racking having my commercial photography assessed by some of New Zealand’s best photographers but I am so glad that I managed to achieve this qualification on my first attempt. Becoming one of only a handful of qualified commercial photographers operating in Central Otago will be important part of my professional and business development” said Ms Harman.
The NZIPP Qualification programme (Q certificates) exists to establish a standard of quality in the businesses of the institutes’ members. It identifies NZIPP members to the public as photographers who have attained a credible quality standard and have a commitment to running their businesses in a professional way, with skill and knowledge. This is what separates the NZIPP from associations and groups with no entry restrictions.
