Debut EP out September 1st for ex-stellar* Kurt Shanks
Plus1 releases Kurt Shanks' five song EP Seven Flights Up on Thursday September 1st - his first solo recordings after last year’s farewell shows from his old band stellar*.
For its release, Kurt and his band are playing at the Thirsty Dog (K Rd) on Thursday Sept 1, with special guests Greg Fleming and The Trains (tickets from UnderTheRadar.co.nz).
The new EP ranges in dynamics from delicate finger-picked acoustics to in-your-face rockin’ electric guitars, with sharp lyrical songwriting and strong melodies running throughout.
Three of the tracks - We Shall Have Another Day, Shoot to Kill and Seven Flights Up - are produced by Wayne Bell, recorded by Tui-nominated Neil Baldock, and mixed by Chris van de Geer.
The others - Where Would You Go, and You – were recorded at Kurt's own studio.
Other musicians featured on the E.P. are Andrew Thorne, Mark Hughes, Lani Purkis from Elemeno P, and Troy Shanks (Kurt's brother).
“The solo thing is a completely different vibe from being a quarter share in a band, and I’ve really enjoyed partnering up with friends and musicians to bring these recordings to fruition. For the past year or so, songs have been dropping from the tree and I’ve been catching them, so there’s going to be an album before long, and more shows too,” says Kurt, who penned all of the songs.
The EP follows on from his well-received support slots for Steve Kilbey (The Church) and Ricky Maymi (Brian Jonestown Massacre) around NZ in July / August.
Seven Flights Up will be available from selected record stores, plus iTunes, Amplifier.co.nz and www.KurtShanks.com
