Top talent to hit the slopes for 2011 Uni Snow Games

New Zealand’s top university sporting talent will hit the slopes this month for the 66th annual Uni Snow Games.

Staged from August 27 to September 3, the Uni Snow Games are set to attract the country’s leading university-based snow athletes, with more than 100 competitors expected in Wanaka for the annual event.

University Sport New Zealand National Events Manager Peter McDonald said the Uni Snow Games traditionally attracted a wide range of athletes – from Olympians to those competing in their first snow-sports event.

He expected this year’s event would rank highly in the competitive stakes.

“The elite athletes, the friendly but competitive rivalry between the campuses and the amazing talent and ability amongst university-based athletes all combine to make the Uni Snow Games an awesome week,” he said.

“The games are also a great chance for University Sport New Zealand to strengthen our bid to host the 2018 World University Winter Games – the international equivalent of New Zealand’s Uni Snow Games.

“New Zealand definitely has world-class mountains and our athletes are of an equally high quality – this event is a real chance for us to showcase what we’ve got.”

Events across the week include the popular halfpipe, sponsored by Base Backpackers, Slope Style, the Skull Candy-sponsored Big Air and – new for this year – the parallel slalom which will feature knock-out finals.
