Ever since its 2009 debut, Beyondsemble, ‘the ensemble beyond genre’ has excited audiences with its enormous vitality and range.

“I’ve played in numerous bands and dreamed about creating one band that could play it all,” says the Beyondsemble’s Craig Denham. ‘This band can.”

All four members are multi instrumentalists able to perform in a range of musical styles merging Celtic, Eastern European and Gypsy with Latin and tango rhythms as well as improvising in jazz, swing and rock.

Besides seasoned professional Craig Denham (Mamaku Project, ex-Ardijah, Club Manouche etc) on accordion, keyboards, vocals and whistles, the band consists of Jess Hindin (The Exiles, Tim Beveridge, Boh Runga etc) on violin and keyboards, Chris Koole (The Warners) on vocals and home made percussion, and rising acoustic guitar star Mark Mazengarb on guitars and bouzouki.

The ensemble, which provided the pre show music for the 2010 World of Wearable Art awards in Wellington, will launch its first studio album, Beyondsemble, on this, the group’s first tour with Arts On Tour NZ.

Bios
Craig Denham has been composing and performing most of his life. He began playing professionally at age 12 with his father Bob Denham, a Kerikeri jazz saxophone and clarinet player. Craig has opened at the Auckland Festival with the Mamaku Project, played WOMAD and performed in Australia, The United States, UK and Ireland, France and the Islands.

Jess Hindin has a performance degree in violin from Auckland University and currently performs in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. After university, she travelled to Ireland and joined a traditional Irish stage show in Galway. While she was there, she successfully auditioned for the internationally touring world music show “Barrage” based in Alberta Canada. She returned home after five years of extensive touring to continue her career as a full time freelance musician concentrating more on writing and arranging music. When she’s not touring one of her bands, Jessica spends time in the studio recording for various jazz, country, and celtic artists.
Bios continued
After completing his Bachelor of Music at the Wellington Conservatorium of Music in 2006, Mark Mazengarb visited the U.S. where he learned from a variety of top guitarists. Returning to New Zealand, he received the Frank-Winter Memorial Award at the 2008 Auckland Folk Festival, given to aspiring young musicians with clear musical goals. The award enabled him to travel to Nashville to attend and perform at the Chet Atkins Convention. Mark performs in several bands and is also a soloist. He recently released his debut album – Acoustic Affair.

Chris Koole grew up in a musical family where he and his brothers learned the piano before moving onto guitar and drums. A composer as well as a performer, Chris has created his own version of the cajon (box drum) as a way to reproduce most of the sounds of a drum kit without having to transport one.

Arts On Tour New Zealand
Arts On Tour New Zealand (AOTNZ) organises tours of outstanding New Zealand performers to rural and smaller centres in New Zealand. The trust receives funding from Creative New Zealand and liaises with local arts councils, repertory theatres and community groups to bring the best of musical and other talent to country districts.
