Transport Plans For Bledisloe Cup And RWC 2011 At Eden Park

For pool matches at Eden Park the aim is to have 60 per cent of fans arrive by ways other than private car (rail, bus, walking, taxi and coach). For Finals matches that target jumps to 70 per cent.

Trains and special event buses are free with a match ticket from three hours before kickoff until the end of services. For the 9 September opening ceremony and match travel is free from 4.30pm, three hours before the ceremony starts.

Transport by numbers

(note all figures are based on 60,000 attendance)

Trains – 14,500 between the CBD and Kingsland Station, 2500 from the west to Morningside Station. On RWC match days there will be 88 extra train services operating.

Special event buses:

• CBD (outside Civic Theatre on Queen St) 500 passengers, 45 buses.

• North Shore 2300 passengers, 40 buses

TRAINS

Trains change to match day operations from three hours before kick off (note from 4.30pm for the opening ceremony and match on 9 September) and continue until about 2am.

Match services to Eden Park


Fans need to travel early to beat the crowds. Those leaving late aren’t guaranteed to make kick off.

For the biggest matches trains are expected to take 14,500 passengers from the CBD, south and east, and about 2500 from the west.

Trains run approximately every 5-7minutes from Britomart to Kingsland and only stop at Grafton Station on the way. The journey between Britomart and Kingsland stations is about 15 minutes. Kingsland is the match day station for travel from/to the CBD, south and east.

Some special event train services along the southern line from Papakura will go direct from Newmarket to Kingsland. For all other journeys on the southern and eastern lines use normal scheduled services to Britomart and then catch a special event train to Kingsland.

Trains from the west run to Morningside approx. every 15 minutes.

Morningside is the match day station for travel from/to the west.

After the match trains will run about every five minutes from both platforms at Kingsland to the CBD (stopping only at Grafton Station), with passengers cleared within 70 minutes. To the west trains will leave every 10-15 minutes from both sides of the platform at Morningside Station, with passengers cleared within an hour.

Nine trains will be lined up between Kingsland and Morningside stations to be ready to clear crowds quickly after the game.

Britomart Station:

Fans travelling to Eden Park by train from the CBD need to use the Queen St entrance.

Before and after the match fans transferring between southern/eastern line trains and special event trains will be directed up to street level at the eastern entrance before boarding their next train. This is necessary to safely manage the large crowds and is based on operations at major international events.

Not going to Eden Park

The best advice for passengers is to think about travelling early or later.

From at least 4.30pm (three hours before kick off/opening ceremony start for RWC 2011) trains will be very busy as large crowds head to Eden Park. This means some key changes to how services operate:

Changes to Britomart Transport Centre:

From approximately 5pm all regular train passengers (i.e. those not going to the rugby) will be directed to enter Britomart Transport Centre via the eastern entrance at Tukutai Square off Gore St (under the Westpac building). This is to manage crowd safety and will give them priority boarding onto their train without waiting behind rugby fans.

All passengers arriving at Britomart on trains who want to leave the station will be directed to the exits at the eastern end of the station.

All passengers arriving at Britomart on trains who want to transfer onto regular or special event train services will also be directed to the eastern end of the station ready to board their connecting service.

This entrance will be well signposted and Auckland Transport ambassadors will help with directions. Regular customers will be able to purchase their train tickets from staff at this entrance, as the main ticket office is likely to be closed during the pre-game period.

Travelling West:

The last service stopping at all stations on route to Waitakere will depart from Britomart at 4.20pm.

Train services departing Britomart at 4.54pm, 5.54pm and 6.54pm will NOT stop at Newmarket station. Passengers heading to Newmarket are advised to catch southern line train or a rail replacement bus from Britomart (bus stop 7028, Commerce St). After the 6.54pm train service, buses will replace trains between Britomart and Morningside continuing onto Waitakere (stopping at all stations).

Normal scheduled train services will resume at 10.50pm from Britomart.

Travelling to the city:

City-bound train services departing Waitakere at 4.26pm, 5.26pm and 6.26pm will NOT stop at Newmarket station. Passengers heading to Newmarket are advised to catch a Rail Replacement Bus from Morningside (bus stop 8217, 639-641 New North Rd).

The 7.26pm service from Waitakere will stop at all stations en route to Britomart. The 8.26pm and 9.26pm services departing Waitakere will terminate at Morningside. If travelling beyond this point you will be directed to the rail replacement bus service (which will travel via all train stations to Britomart).

Normal scheduled services are expected to resume at 10.26pm from Waitakere.

Special event buses

Travel is free on special event buses for three hours before kick-off (or from 4.30pm before the opening ceremony and match) and one hour after a game (or until the crowd has cleared) with a match ticket.

A 12 bay dedicated bus/coach interchange, capable of moving more than 8500 patrons an hour, has been created at Eden Park. This includes event transport, VIPs, sponsors, media, and corporate hospitality.

Special event buses depart from:

• CBD: buses depart Civic Theatre, Queen Street every 5 minutes. Last bus departs 30 minutes before kick-off at Eden Park.
•
• North Shore: buses depart Albany every 10 minutes stopping at all Northern Busway stations. Last bus departs 90 minutes before kick-off at Eden Park.
•
• Takapuna: buses depart Hurstmere Road every 15 minutes. Last bus departs 90 minutes before kick-off at Eden Park.
•
• Newmarket and Mt Eden: buses depart Remuera Road every 10 minutes stopping at Mt Eden Rail Station and Mt Eden Village. Last bus departs 50 minutes before kick-off at Eden Park.
•
• South/East: buses depart Manukau Town Centre every 30 minutes on route to Botany Town Centre and Westfield Pakuranga. Last bus departs 90 minutes before kick-off at Eden Park
•
• Alexandra Park camper van park: buses depart every 10 to 15 minutes. Last buse departs 50 minutes before kick-off (not operating for Bledisloe Cup).
•
WALKING

Up to 3000 are expected to walk the Fan Trail (the walking route from Queen Elizabeth Square to Eden Park). For Bledisloe Cup the Fan Trail will be partially activated from the New North Road intersection with Sandringham Road, to Wairepo Swamp Walk. Elements of the entertainment component of this activation will be in place which will include:

• Roving performers, face painters and a giant inflatable man promoting the Fan Trail.

• Communications, security and volunteers will be in place. Volunteers will be providing inform people about the Fan Trail and hand out information.
•
TAXI

Taxis operate throughout the city with drop off points about 400m from Eden Park.

After the match, taxi ranks will be located on Dominion Road (between Walters Road and Burnley Terrace, and between View and Valley roads) and New North Road, west of Kingsland shops.

A mobility taxi rank is located in Bellwood Avenue near Cromwell Street for mobility drop off / pick up. Access is available via a check point at Walters Road and Cromwell Street. An orange mobility sticker is required for access. A mobility shuttle will take patrons to the venue. Pre-booked mobility taxis must be at the rank before the match ends to avoid road closures post match.

DRIVING

There is no parking at Eden Park. Parking restrictions and road closures will be in place around Eden Park. Parking is outside residential parking zones (link to Eden Park Permits).

The main drop off point for private vehicles is on Dominion Road. Limo and private hire vehicle drop off is on Valley Road.

ROAD CLOSURES AND PARKING RESTRICTIONS

Drivers are advised to avoid the area around Eden Park before and after matches as there will be more traffic and potential delays.

On match days the main section of road to be closed to all traffic is Sandringham Rd between New North Rd and Reimers Ave, where the vast majority of crowds will be walking. The section of George St which crosses the rail lines will also be closed to all traffic.

Bond St will be closed to all traffic expect permit holders from three hours before and one to two hours after the match. Taxis will be able to enter Bond St from Great North Rd before the event. There is a taxi drop off point on Bond St.

New North Rd, between Kingsland Ave and Dominion Rd, will closed to all traffic expect permit holders from half time until one to two hours after the match.

Access to the Zone A area around Eden Park will be only for residents and businesses with the correct permit. On street parking is available for vehicles with permits on streets that aren’t reserved for public transport, taxis or traffic management.

Zone B areas are reserved for residents with permits.
