New additions to Behind Closed Doors Exhibition

MEDIA ADVISORY
2 August 2011

New additions to Behind Closed Doors exhibition

The Adam Art Gallery is delighted to announce the addition of new works to its major exhibition ‘Behind Closed Doors: New Zealand Art from Private Collections in Wellington’, from 9 August.

These include three works by Colin McCahon: Singing Women (1945-6), Elias Will he Save Him? (1961-62), and The Third Bellini Madonna (1961-62); and a painting by Toss Woollaston—Nelson Landscape (1947).

The window space of the gallery is changing every six weeks. The current work, Duck Character and Mouse Character (1999) by Ronnie van Hout, will be on display until 28 August.

“Visitors may be struck by the familiarity of these figures, not just because they are wonky replicas of Walt Disney’s most famous inventions (Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse) but because they might have seen similar sculptures in a playground on the waterfront at Picton,” says exhibition curator Christina Barton.

“However, van Hout has added a ‘spicy’ video and soundtrack that turns both duck and mouse into lascivious onlookers.”

Over the course of the exhibition, visitors will also have the opportunity to see works by conceptual artist Billy Apple (September); Francis Upritchard who represented New Zealand at the Venice Biennale in 2009 (October); and up and coming New Zealand artists Daniel du Bern and Dane Mitchell (November-December).
