Downstage & Strike Percussion present

Elemental

Water, Air, Fire, Wood & Iron

Fresh from claiming the title of ‘Audience Favourite’ at the prestigious Taiwan International Percussion Convention, Wellington’s own Strike Percussion return to Downstage to complete their third year as a Resident Company at Downstage with the return of their most exciting work: Elemental.

Elemental is a musical spectacular that combines musicianship with one-of-a-kind visuals. Delicate and evocative to driving, layered rhythms, Strike’s signature showmanship and humour make Elemental a total entertainment package. It’s best understood by taking a look at a couple of videos from the show:

Drumflip –Strike moves; incorporating music and choreography
Hydrophonics – water interacts with metal and air to bend pitch and manipulate sound
Igniter – flames explode into a hot beat

Strike’s trademark moveable scaffolding towers of percussion instruments extend their sound beyond a traditional drum palette, incorporating sophisticated electronic percussion generators through to hunks of steel from a dead Bedford truck.

Under the Artistic Direction of founder and former NZSO member Murray Hickman, Strike is a dynamic combo of cultural diversity and contemporary showmanship elevating percussion to new heights of musical achievement. Strike has toured New Zealand and the world, collaborating with musicians as varied as John Psathas, Kora, Gareth Farr and Warren Maxwell.

Making his debut with Strike this season is young Auckland drummer Tom Broome, who beat out huge competition during auditions to be selected into the group.
