CPIT Expo for Engineers Going Places

The world’s smallest folding electric bike and the very fast Ariel Atom car will be two highlights amongst the displays at CPIT’s Engineering Expo this Wednesday [13 July].

The expo will showcase some 16 engineering industry partners, giving aspiring engineers the chance to talk to employers about study pathways and career options.

Product innovators such as YikeBike and Martin Jetpack will exhibit local inventions that are attracting world attention. Martin Jetpack is the world’s first practical passenger jetpack, already in demand in the defence, leisure and emergency response sectors overseas. YikeBike, which unfolds and folds in just 10 seconds, travels at 23 km/hr and weighs just 10.8kg, is also set for popular demand.

Visitors to the expo will also have the chance to win a ride in the Ariel Atom car, a doorless, roofless and very fast machine made in the UK, which will be on display on the day.

Global leaders in mechanical, electrical and telecommunications engineering such as Tait Electronics, Telecom and Airways NZ will be at the event alongside successful local companies such as Dynamic Controls, the world's leading manufacturer of electronic controls for power wheelchairs and scooters, and Orion, which owns and operates the electricity distribution network across 8,000 square kilometres of central Canterbury.

Inspired young would-be engineers can then explore the training programmes that will kickstart their careers. CPIT launched a new three-year Bachelor in Engineering Technology last year and a two-year New Zealand Diploma of Engineering this year. Both were developed in close consultation with industry requirements.

“For those interested in applied engineering this is a good time to explore the options,” CPIT’s Head of School of Engineering Paul Elmes said. “All of our courses are industry-endorsed and highly regarded because they are relevant to current conditions. New Zealand needs more engineering graduates and nowhere more so than Canterbury.”

Mid-year intakes are available for the Bachelor in Engineering Technology, Computer Technicians Certificate, Diploma in Advanced Computer Aided Design, Diploma in Computer Aided Design and the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering.

The Engineering Expo is from 3 to 7pm on 13 July at CPIT’s Wharenui, Madras Street campus.
