Harmonious Sounds Of Bach

Media Release June 2011

Harmonious Sounds Of Bach

“Amalia Hall brought tears to my eyes”, “Meditative beauty” and “Overwhelming”, are just a few of the critical acclaims bestowed upon Amalia Hall, who is recognised as the foremost violinist to emerge from New Zealand and will be performing in a special concert this month at Parnell’s Holy Trinity Cathedral.

The concert will be a feast for the ears, not only for a seasoned classical and Bach music aficionado. The programme for the third concert in the Bach Musica NZ 2011 Subscription Series, ‘Best of Bach’ is a feat of atmosphere, ambience and mood and will provide a profound and captivating music experience in what will be a rare opportunity to hear Amalia Hall in concert.

Travelling from her home in Philadelphia, this extraordinary New Zealand musical talent is back in the country especially for this concert. Bach Musica Musical Director Rita Paczian says “the concert is a must see for anybody, including aspiring musicians who want to be inspired. Amalia and the collective talent of the choir and orchestra is awe inspiring and thought provoking.”

In keeping with the title, ‘Best of Bach’ will be a special German treat with masterpieces by J.S. Bach, including a piece which is arguably the most beautiful by Richard Wagner. His Siegfried Idyll was composed in 1870 as a birthday present for his wife Cosima. It is described as a labour of love, a sumptuous piece of music that expressed Wagner’s paternal and romantic love in a tender and unforgettable way.

Bach’s jubilant ‘Magnificat’, with its trumpet fanfares and virtuoso 5-part choruses contrasted with beautiful arias, will prove an uplifting performance. The concert will be opened in Bach’s Violin Concerto in E Major, played by Amalia Hall.

Also part of the programme will be a performance of ‘Wir Eilen’ from Cantata 78 and Ave Maria by David MacIntyre, sung by Kristin School Choir, under Musical Director Nick Richardson.

Concert-goers will enjoy a complimentary glass of wine from Morton Estate wines at the conclusion of the event.
