THE RUGBY COMEDY
FEST
22nd October, 2011
The world’s leading rugby raconteurs will gather in Auckland during Rugby World Cup 2011 for a night of great humour at the Rugby Comedy Festival on Saturday October 22.
Billed as a night of “high hilarity, stinging one liners & superb entertainment for those who have hearts that beat to the rugby rhythm”, up to 2,000 rugby followers are expected to attend.
A headline event for the REAL New Zealand Festival, the Rugby Comedy Festival will be a high profile celebration of one of the great aspects of rugby – the camaraderie and banter that develops between players, teams, clubs and countries.
The evening will be hosted by Kiwi funny man Oscar Kightley, the much-loved writer and actor who brought us bro’Town and Sione’s Wedding. As Oscar explains “Sure, Australians sound funny when they swear and Poms sound funny when they talk. But Kiwi's are hilarious. It comes naturally, being from the only South Pacific Island nation where it snows.”
“In a year when so many people have experienced tough times, what could be better than the combining of the sport we love and some much-needed laughs?” says former All Black and local rugby comic Eric Rush.
Adding to the international flavor is Scotsman Ian Robertson who is best known as BBC Radio’s rugby commentator along with Englishman Martin Bayfield - a giant on the field (at 6 foot 10 inches), in front of the camera (he appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) and a giant on stage as the reigning king of British rugby comedy. Australian’s leading comedian Vince Sorrenti will also join the comedy scrum, he states “There will be lots of crouching, touching and engaging - but in a warm, entertaining way so the only injuries are likely to be side splitting ones from cracking up so much."
Other comics will complete the line up of rugby’s funniest speakersfrom the major rugby playing nations.
