Dear
All,
Schütz “Seven Last Words from the Cross” is set
for 5-part choir and 5-part consort of instruments – not
specified by Schütz, but modern performers use viols, as do
we. We are bringing Polly Sussex and Carol Buckton down from
Auckland, to join Kevin Wilkinson and Susan Alexander, and I
shall be playing treble. The consort will also play a suite
from J.H.Schein’s Banchetto Musicale, and Pavan by John
Jenkins, as well as three songs by Senfl in which they will
be joined by Kieran Raynor and William McElwee. There will
also be two soprano duets by Schütz, sung by Amy Van de
Laar and Olivia Webb.
Schola Cantorum gives its first performance of the year. The first half of the programme consists of unaccompanied music – African songs, Shape-note songs, motets by Michael Haydn, etc, so lots of variety and youthful verve.
There will be no admission charge, but we will be soliciting donations towards the costs of putting on the concert. Thanks to a generous donation, we have 15 bottles of Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir (2008),(retails at $45)to give away with the first 15 donations of $45 and over.
This concert contains two compelling reasons (twin obsessions) why I decided to pass the direction of the Musica Sacra concert series to new hands: so that I could set up a youth choir, and help develop interest in the music for consort of viols.
I hope you can come,
Robert Oliver
