Pio Casts His Net to Europe

Presenter Pio Terei is casting his net further than ever in the newest season of TANGAROA WITH PIO with visits as far a field as France, England and the Isle of Man.

The new series of bilingual fishing programme TANGAROA WITH PIO, follows Pio Terei on his escapades around the coastal communities of Aotearoa, the Pacific and Europe.

TANGAROA WITH PIO producer and director Aroha Shelford says having the opportunity to film in Europe was well worth the planning and logistics that went into the shoot.

“The French markets were amazing and being out on the Irish Sea was a treat! But it is still great to film at home, and it reminded us that Aotearoa is definitely a beautiful place. We are lucky to have the fish and kaimoana resources that we have – so we need to look after it!”

In typical Pio fashion, this series continues to focus on colourful locals and the places they live. Pio shows us various fishing techniques, and leaves us salivating as he feasts on local kai.

I’d like to think of it as a fishing show for the intelligent. It has a bit more of a story, focusing on the connection between the sea, lakes and rivers and our people.

“Fishing is a big part of sustaining life rather than just being a sport. I don’t profess to be a pro but as long as I’m able to catch a fish to take it back to feed the whanau I’m happy,” he says.

The series kicks off on home turf where Pio hangs out with the waka contingent and the Royal New Zealand Navy in Waitangi during Treaty celebrations.

ENDS

Not your average fishing show, TANGAROA WITH PIO series six premieres on Maori Television on Sunday 29 May at 5pm.
