Winter Games NZ Trust announces new board members

LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (7 May, 2011) - Winter Games NZ has announced the appointment of two new members to its board of trustees.

Ron Anderson of Arrow International Group Ltd has 40 years experience in the construction and property industries where he has been involved in various recreational projects, sporting facilities and retirement village. He is a founding director of the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin and has served on the Trust for four years.

He was a founding director of Arrow International in 1984 and has led the company in the management of a large number of projects throughout New Zealand and Australia.

"The Winter Games have been very successful and the potential for its future is enormous,” he said. “The benefits to tourism and its participation with young people are outstanding. I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to be a member of the board.”

Michael Sidey of Forsyth Barr also joins the board, bringing with him his seven years of expertise as a director of the New Zealand Academy of Sport South Island.

“The Winter Games has received accolades worldwide both for its organisation and venue. The benefits to the region must be harnessed and locked in and I am keen to be involved in assisting this to be achieved,” he said. “The opportunity for spectators to see the world’s best athletes and our own winter sports aspirants competing against them will enhance New Zealand performances in future Olympic and World Cup events reflecting well on the country.”

The two new appointments follow the recent resignation of founding board member, Chris Doig who has retired due to ill health.

Winter Games NZ chairman, Sir Eion Edgar said, “The Winter Games board reluctantly accepted Chris Doig’s resignation at its last meeting due to his health problems. Chris has given outstanding service to the governance and direction of the Winter Games. His vast experience in a wide variety of sports and arts fields greatly assisted the success of the 2009 Games and set the platform for this year’s Games.”

Sir Eion Edgar went on to say he welcomed both new board members, together with the wealth of skills and knowledge they bring to Winter Games NZ.

“Having people of Ron and Michael’s calibre is an outstanding opportunity for the Games,” he said. “Right from the start 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games was highly ambitious but the strength of the team behind the scenes, from the board and management to the volunteers ensured the inaugural event in 2009 was a huge success. 2011 is already panning out to be even better. Ron and Michael will no doubt play a significant role in building Winter Games NZ to become one of the world’s preeminent winter sports events.”

Ron Anderson and Michael Sidey join the existing WGNZ board of Jane Huria, Paul Allison, Rick Pettit and Sir Eion Edgar.
