Don McGlashan goes Solo in the North Island

Don McGlashan is back on his bike! Following his cycle accident in March, Don is about to repeat the success of his hugely popular 2010 South Island tour and will present Don McGlashan Solo to North Island audiences.

Recognised as one of New Zealand’s foremost songwriters and performers, with five entries in APRA New Zealand’s Top 100 Songs of All Time, this enigmatic and hugely talented artist will present a range of songs from his repertoire, including items from his two most recent CDs, ‘Warm Hand’ and ‘Marvellous Year’.

Don McGlashan
Don was born in Auckland in 1959, studied English and Music at Auckland University, and played French horn and percussion in the Auckland Symphonia (Auckland Philharmonia) 1979-82.

He was a member of the percussion ensemble From Scratch 1979-86 and was drummer and singer with Auckland post pop punk band Blam Blam Blam 1980-82.

After a year in New York as a drummer with avant-garde dance company Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, he returned to New Zealand and formed the innovative music/theatre/film act The Front Lawn with Harry Sinclair in 1985, adding actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand in 1989. The group performed at the Edinburgh festival in 1988 and 1989, as well as in Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, before disbanding in 1990.

From 1991 until 2002 he was singer and main songwriter in The Mutton Birds.

Don has composed numerous soundtracks for television and movies, including An Angel at my Table (NZ 1990), Cinema of Unease (UK/NZ 1995), Dean Spanley (UK/NZ 2008), and Show of Hands (NZ 2008). He also composed several pieces for Limbs Dance Company.

In 1982, Don won the ‘Best Song’ category in the New Zealand Music Awards for the Blam Blam Blam song, ‘Don’t fight it Marsha, its bigger than both of us’, and in 1989, together with Harry Sinclair, received three awards for their work as The Front Lawn. ‘Warm Hand’ was a finalist in the 2006 Album of the Year awards and his work on the album also placed him in the running for the Best Male Solo Artist award.

In 2001, he received a University of Auckland Literary Fellowship for song writing and in 2002 he was made a New Zealand Arts Foundation Laureate.

Don opened solo for Crowded House on their 2008 US, Canada, European and Australian tours, and was part of the Neil Finn project ‘7 Worlds Collide’.
