Yamaha Class Wins Earns Kinsman Trip To Japan
Auckland's Daniel Kinsman will be winging his way to Japan later this year thanks to victory in the 100cc Yamaha Light class at the 2011 Speedy Signs KartSport New Zealand National Sprint championships meeting in Invercargill on Sunday.
Kinsman, who won the New Zealand 100cc Junior Yamaha title at the Nationals in Hamilton in 2009 and the North Island Senior 100cc Yamaha title in Auckland over Labour Weekend last year, was the stand-out driver at this year's National Sprint Championship meeting in Invercargill, qualifying quickest and completing a clean sweep of the Senior 100cc Yamaha Light races on Sunday and finishing a close second - after qualifying quickest and winning three of the four races - in the 125cc Rotax Max Light class on Saturday.
The trip to Japan is courtesy Yamaha Motor New Zealand, who have been providing the winner of the New Zealand 100cc Yamaha Light class title at the Sprint Nationals a trip to the annual Toyota All-Japan SL Kart meeting for the past six years.
As well as being one of 10 class champions crowned over the weekend Kinsman was one of five drivers to enjoy podium finishes in more than one class.
Three of the other four, Aucklanders Ryan Urban and Daniel Bray and Christchurch driver Simon Hunter claimed a class win and a third apiece while the fourth, Tokoroa's Bradley Tyrrell, claimed a second and a third.
Kinsman and older brother Mathew were also one of two sibling pairs to do well over the weekend, Mathew supplementing Daniel's win and second place with a second place of his own in the KZ2 class.
The other brothers to do well were Thomas and Campbell Joyes from Hamilton who finished first and second respectively in the 100cc Junior Restricted Yamaha class on Sunday.
Of the ten titles earned over the weekend only one went to a defending champion, 100cc Junior Yamaha class title holder James Penrose from Rangiroa.
The others went to a fairly even mix of established stars and new faces.
Flying the flag for the established stars were Daniel Kinsman (100cc Yamaha Light), Ryan Urban (KZ2), Simon Hunter (100cc Yamaha Heavy) and Daniel Bray (Open), and for the new faces, Auckland's Daniel Connor (125cc Rotax Max Light), Christchurch's Marcus Armstrong (Cadet), Gold Coast-based Kiwi Lane Moore (125cc Rotax Max Heavy), Christchurch's Alex Webb (KF3) and Hamilton's Thomas Joyes (100cc Junior Restricted Yamaha)
Local honour, meanwhile, was preserved by kart and single-seater car racer Damon Leitch from Invercargill who ended up a close second to Aucklander Daniel Bray in the Open class on Sunday after qualifying quickest, winning the two heats and Pre-Final and leading the first 11 laps of the Final.
Over 170 karters plus family members and supporters made the trip south for the 52nd National Sprint Championship meeting which is being televised by Southland TV channel Cue TV with two one hour shows (Sky digital channel 110 and Freeview satellite channel 23).
The first will air on Saturday May 7 at 8.00pm with repeats on Saturday May 14 at 3.30pm, Saturday May 21 at 3.30pm and Sunday May 29 at 2.30pm.
The 2011 Speedy Signs KartSport New Zealand National Sprint Championship meeting was run with the assistance of class sponsors, Invercargill Oil Shop, Kiwi Karts, Macaulay Ford, Mainland Karting, SBS Bank, Southland Brakes and Driveline, The Southland Times, The Rock and Transport Engineering Southland.
Ends
Kiwi-born but Gold Coast-based
driver Lane Moore will take the 125cc Rotax Max Heavy trophy
back across the Tasman with him after leading home Tokoroa's
Bradley Tyrrell and Christchurch's Summon Hunter in the
Final on Sunday.
