Fun run to promote women's heart health
Jennian Homes Whakatane launches fun run to promote women's heart health
May 8 this year sees a new event for women in Whakatane - the Jennian Homes Mother's Day 5k.
Inspired by the Heart Foundation Go Red for Women campaign, the fun run / walk is timed to take place as the organisation puts out a red alert that heart disease is the leading killer of New Zealand women.
Heart disease takes four times as many lives as breast cancer, yet the majority of women do not realise their risk.
Bay of Plenty heart health advocate, Sandy Ritchie, urges local women to support this inaugural event.
"We support anything that gets people out and active and this event fits so well with our campaign. Go Red for Women celebrates the energy, passion and power we have as women to band together to beat heart disease.
"It's important for women to take time out and take care of themselves to make them healthy and strong to care for their families."
Jennian Homes is a national supporter of the Heart Foundation. However, it is the local management's added passion for the campaign that has brought about the fun run.
The Jennian Homes Mother's Day 5k will start and finish at Heads Reserve, taking participants to the bridge and back along the scenic Warren Cole walkway. Please check in by 9am, ready to set off at 9.30.
All women taking part on the day have a chance to win some great spot prizes. And everyone registering before 29 April will receive a free event t-shirt.
The organisers invite families to come and support their mums and partners and spend some time celebrating the achievement of the women in their lives on Mother's Day.
Anyone wanting to help further is invited to raise funds for the Heart Foundation by visiting heartracer.org.nz and signing up as a Heart Racer.
