Statement For Pacific Prayer Day

Statement For Pacific Prayer Day - 30 April 2011

Churches around New Zealand are inviting people from their communities to join them to pray for those affected by the recent disasters in the Pacific, including the Christchurch earthquakes, the Japanese earthquake and tsunami and the Pike River mine disaster.

The Pacific Prayer day is set for Saturday the 30th of April and all of the major national church leaders are encouraging their churches to open their doors to anyone who wants to remember those who have lost loved ones, communities and livelihoods in the disasters.

Baptist church leader Rodney Macann says many people are currently struggling with the uncertainty of life.

He says the prayer day is very timely as it follows Easter, when we celebrate Christ's death and resurrection, the ultimate story of hope and new beginnings arising out of despair.

Mr Macann says there are many untold stories of the voluntary work that churches continue to do in the disaster areas and the prayer day will be a good chance to recognize that work and to highlight the need to keep going.

Rodney Macann says whilst all churches will mark the Pacific Prayer day in their own way, most will lead a short midday service including a reading, a prayer and the music video "Morning Light" which highlights the impact of the earthquake on Christchurch .
