Rally aces share their secrets
Rally co-drivers attending the MotorSport Co-drivers Collegiate in August will work with Hayden Paddon and John Kennard to learn the finer points of the co-driver’s role.
Hayden and John wanted to put something back into the sport, which has helped them develop their career over the past few years, and have pencilled the collegiate on August 14 into their calendar.
“The Rally Co-driver Collegiate is designed for co-drivers relatively new to the game, who may be competing at club or regional grade and are now ready to step up to the national level,” said manager of the MotorSport Scholarship Trust Ian Snellgrove.
“Co-drivers play a critical role and must learn to be at one with the driver. They must have a good understanding of the rules and procedures of rallying.
“A key role is note taking. Hayden and John will help students develop note-writing skills. Co-drivers need to understand there is more than one way to write notes and the type of notes required and the way they are called may vary from event to event.
“Students will learn all sorts of tricks used by professionals,” Ian said. “There will also be sessions on sponsorship, mental preparation, nutrition and safety.”
Anyone interested in attending the collegiate, to be held 13-14 August, can find all the details, including the application form, on the MotorSport NZ website – just check out the banner at the top of the homepage http://www.motorsport.org.nz/. Applications close on Friday 9 July and places are limited to a maximum of ten students.
