An incredible world of illusions in Wellington
Maths and science are entertaining in Mirror Magic, a dazzling exhibition which opens at Capital E on Saturday 16th
April.
Mirror Magic, developed by Te Manawa Museums Trust and showing for the first time in Wellington, is an interactive
installation using mirrors to explore the extraordinary potential of reflections and reflected light. Over 20 exhibits
will transform Capital E’s main floor to reveal the dazzling world of convex, concave, multiple and moving mirrors.
Change your appearance in a shape shifter, solve the decoding device, discover the beauty of the giant kaleidoscope and
see what happens when you try to eat the jelly beans!
Alongside Mirror Magic, Capital E is holding three unique workshops that will give children eight and over an
opportunity to get hands-on and creative. If you’re out and about in Civic Square give Capital E a wave, you just never
know who might be watching! In a two hour workshop children will be stepping inside a life-size Camera Obscura to spy on
passers by. After learning the ins and outs of how the invention comes to life they will create their own Camera Obscura
to take home.
Become a Hologram and star in a short 3D holographic film in this busy and imaginative two-day workshop. Children begin
the adventure at Museum of Wellington City & Sea where they see legendary Taniwha stories told as amazing 3D holograms. After delving into the Museums treasure
trove of stories, they head to Capital E’s OnTV Studio and use green screen technology to make their own holographic
film.
Ever wondered what it would be like to create and walk around in your own 3D world? Using amazing software, the
expertise of the Soundhouse studio and a pair of 3D glasses you now can! Get the-know-how and uncover a multimedia world
at your fingertips in Many Me’s. Take part in one, two or three day workshops where you will learn how to create your
own video show, start up a blog and share your ideas in pictures, sounds, video and much more.
Then, in a fabulous finale to the holidays on Saturday 30 April, get your glad rags for the most sought after event on
the kids’ calendar. The Mirror Ball will have a professional dance instructor on-hand to take you through some disco
moves and with music from the 70’s through to today, Mum and Dad are sure to be up and boogying too! Bring a group, meet
your friends or pop down in fancy dress and party away the end of the school holidays in true disco style.
