New Zealand artists unite for Christchurch charity
event
A Christchurch earthquake charity
event being held in Auckland is bringing together the
collective talents of over 100 of the country’s top
performers in one multi-stage showcase to raise money for
the Red Cross NZ’s efforts in the quake stricken area. The
Christchurch Earthquake Benefit Concert is being held at the
ASB Showgrounds on Friday 1st April and will feature a
star-studded line-up of musical and artistic performers
covering popular music, electronic music and circus. King
Kapisi, Avalanche City, Dane Rumble, Tina Cross, Annie
Crummer and many more will perform and Remix Magazine’s
Our:House brand will run a dance music room. The event is
set to be one of the biggest collaborative music industry
events in New Zealand history and all of the artists
involved have come together to perform for free as a show of
support for those affected by the earthquakes in
Christchurch. All of the ticket proceeds will be donated to
the Red Cross NZ.
Event organiser John Paul Moss said the original concept was to put on a reasonable sized event but once word got out amongst the music community he was soon swamped with requests from bands, DJs and other performers to be part of the event.
“We originally just planned to put on a tribute using our existing network but so many bands contacted us saying they loved the idea that we had to expand it to cater for more,” says Moss.
Once the number of interested artists climbed past 50 the scale of the event had skyrocketed. With only a few weeks to organise such an event many key suppliers in sound, lighting, media etc showed their support by offering services for free in the aim of making the event a reality.
Moss says, “Our aim is to raise money and show support for our mates down south. Literally dozens of people have offered their time to help organise the event to this point and it shows the awesome attitude the music community has towards supporting those in a time of need.”
Artist Jackie Clarke adds. “On behalf of The Lady Killers I would just like to say that at times like this, you just need to raise your hand and ask how can I help. So we are giving the one thing we have, music. When John Paul approached us to play we jumped at the opportunity to join in this nobel venture. What an opportunity to stand alongs side so many greats, for such a wonderful cause.”
Artist MC Mana adds, “When I saw the damage from the quake in my home Christchurch it saddened me greatly. This concert is a way musical artists can use their talents to pitch in and support our fellow kiwis when they’re hurting. It’s going to be a great day with so many styles and stages – and all for a good cause.”
