Wellington’s Big Camp Out Draws Closer
It’s less than two weeks now until Queen of the Whole Universe 2011 “camps out” in Wellington on March 12th at the Opera House. Seats have been selling fast, with festival organizers saying the venue is near capacity! The cast and crew of this year’s Wellington show join those involved in the Auckland show, bringing together a production cast of over seventy volunteers!
The Wellington installment of the “slightly queer” beauty pageant this year boasts a very strong and prestigious judging panel; Mayor Celia-Wade Brown undertakes as difficult a task as being Mayor of Wellington as she’s appointed “head judge” for the ceremony. Meanwhile Sandra Tully from Gold Sponsor MSD, and Paul Hellyer from Silver Sponsor IBM Wellington are both seated in the judging panel.
Joining them will be Labour MP Charles Chauvel, 2004, 2005 and 2009 QWU winner Lola Bangaway and S Bar’s Malcolm and Scott Kennedy-Vaughan to round off the esteemed judges for 2011 (with S Bar receiving just the one collective vote).
Wellington’s special guest performers during the pageant include “Miss Gay Wellington 2010” Michael Gray, who impressed audiences at the Project: Born Neo-Natal Trust fundraiser back in 2010, “Mr URGE Bear 2010” Eric, who is always a highlight of the crowd, and by popular demand The Nancy Boys, who wowed audiences during last year’s Auckland ceremony.
Everything isn’t simply going to take place under one roof either; even before the evening ceremony begins, the QWU organizers have promised a “special treat” for those attending “Out in the Square” during Saturday afternoon.
If you’re still up for partying after the ceremony has finished and the coronation has taken place, this year’s post-event function will take place at Jimmy’s Bar from 11pm to 1am; giving audiences a chance to meet the cast and whoever will be crowed as QWU Wellington 2011.
… and if you are still up for partying even after that, S Bar on Cuba Street will be hosting a post-post-event function from 1am to 6am with DJ Karl Moser, for free.
Tickets still on sale through Ticketek.
