Student City Day a resounding success
Over 2,000 people poured into Arena Manawatu for Saturday’s free Student City Day concert featuring the Sons of Zion, the Feilding High School Ukulele Orchestra, Ladi6 and 1814.
Student City Day is a free event held annually to welcome new and returning students. It’s open to everyone, and this year organisers made it even easier for future students to attend.
Buses from as far away as Dannevirke, Foxton and Levin brought year 13 students in to experience Student City first-hand and enjoy the concert from their own corporate box.
Student City team manager, Mark Maxwell, described the initiative as “a great opportunity to showcase our city to the leaders of tomorrow”.
“The presence of the year 13s really contributed to the buzzing atmosphere”, he said.
Year 13s were just as positive, describing the event as “just awesome” and confirming their plans to study in the city in 2012.
Aranui Davis of Dannevirke High said she “loved every minute of it”, while Jury Riawi suggested organisers “get Sons of Zion every year!”
Stacey Cottrill of Blacksheepdesign said 1814 drew the biggest crowd, with exactly 1814 people in the audience as they took the stage.
A txt competition also ran throughout the event, providing concert-goers with the opportunity to win their own iPad.
Naomi Pullen was the lucky winner on the day, eagerly collecting her prize from Student City’s main man, Coach Dan.
Celebrations wrapped up at 9pm and marked the end of a fantastic Student City O Week.
Photos of the concert and O Week events are now up on the Student City facebook page.
More Student City events will be held throughout the year and students should check out studentcity.org.nz or the Student City facebook page for more information.
