New Zealand Built Boat Leading The Barcelona World Race
Built at the Cooksons boat yard in Auckland, Virbac-Paprec 3 skippered by Jean-Pierre Dick and Loick Peyron is leading the Barcelona round the world yacht race set to pass through Cook Strait in the next 24 hours.
As with all of the boats brought to life by Dick, Virbac-Paprec 3 has outstanding technological innovations. The first is related to a decrease in weight, with the new boat some 15% lighter than Paprec-Virbac 2, with which Jean-Pierre won the Barcelona World Race 2008, which was also built in New Zealand.
The Barcelona World Race is the first only double-handed (two-crew) regatta around the world, approximately 25,000 nautical miles (46,300 km). This edition began on 31st of December 2010 in the Port of Barcelona and the arrival of the leading entries is forecast for the end of March 2011. The course is from Barcelona to Barcelona via three capes: Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn, Cook Strait, putting Antarctica to starboard. The length of the course is along the Great Circle line, the shortest route traced on a map across the world. For more information on the race: http://www.barcelonaworldrace.org/en
