Wellington Fringe Festival - First Time Around
First Time Around
It’s an OE with a twist, combining cinema, live music, a gallery exhibition, a book launch, images and sounds from across the world, and a charity fundraiser all in one.
First Time Around is a movie and live soundtrack based on a 2007-2008 journey from East Asia across Russia and the former Yugoslavia to Portugal, condensed into an hour. It is presented as part of the 2011 Wellington Fringe Festival.
It includes images, text, maps and music from 15 different countries and showcases New Zealand artists trying to make sense of a massive influx of new influences and ideas. It includes such out of the way locations as Mongolia, Siberia and Albania.
The filmmakers Dave Black and Cylvi Manthyng will be on hand to answer questions, and will accompany parts of the film with a live soundtrack.
This will appeal to anyone with an interest in travel, world cultures and ethnic music from Korean shinawi to Russian balalaikas to Portuguese fado.
The screening also marks the launch of 'Koreality', a multifaceted exhibition relating to two highly fascinating years of teaching and travelling in South Korea. Each genuine artifact is for sale, and also includes advance copies of the autobiographical socio-political novel of the same name. (Koreality)
Set out with museum-like simplicity, and accompanied by original soundscapes from Korea, this exhibition includes authentic artifacts which also appear in the movie.
$2 donation from each full price seat will go to the charity Friends & Family of Missings Persons Aotearoa (www.missingpersons.net.nz), a charitable trust dedicated to providing ongoing support, information and education for those left behind when someone goes missing.
