Battle of the Thundercats at Piha
Thundercat racers will face the most challenging conditions to date in the National Series Surfcross competition at Piha
on Saturday February 19.
Thundercat Racing President, Steve Frogley says that the strong surf at Piha will challenge the skill and tenacity of
the crews. Black Pepper driver, Scott Radley believes that racing at Piha presents the toughest conditions for both boat
and crew in the competition. “To do well at Piha we really have to step up our game, consolidate our position and take
the lead,” Radley said.
Smuggler Marine crew, Logan Pringle and Chris Wells, currently holding the dominant position in the surfcross, aim to
overcome the testing surf conditions to maintain their number one position. “We plan to remain consistent, stay ahead
and avoid confrontation in the surf,” Pringle said. Mr Frogley believes that the Piha event is guaranteed to provide big
surf and that the final placings are by no means secure. “Twenty points are on offer for a first place at Piha and
several boats are within easy reach of the leaders,” Frogley said.
The Surf Cross Race will run from 11am to 3pm at Mid Beach north of Lion Rock. The race commences with a Le-Mans style
sprint into the water.
Competition is fierce as boats compete in a series of heats over several laps on a rectangular shaped course at high
speeds over challenging surf. It is an adrenaline filled race with boats making impressive jumps, reaching heights of 4
metres above the waves.
