Fogg takes NZV8 pole in Timaru
LG Motorsport’s Angus Fogg put together a super-hot qualifying lap to grab pole in the Timaru round of the BNT V8s Championship today, Saturday 21 January.
Fogg’s time of 1:06.000 on the 2.4km Timaru International Motor Raceway put the LG-ZB Falcon into the coveted pole position for the first of three races on Sunday.
Fogg, who topped the BNT V8s Championships leader-board for the first two rounds, says the LG-ZB Falcon is in good form.
“We spent the week going over it in Invercargill and I’m confident it will be quick tomorrow,” said the popular Auckland-based driver.
“We actually had a clutch bearing fail during the second test session earlier today, but the guys quickly fixed that. During the 20-minute, all-in qualifying session, we went out to set the third-quickest time then came into the pits to watch what happened. Others were getting some quick times and ours was down as far as eighth before we popped some new tyres on the car and went out to set a time of 1:05.942 which was even faster than our pole-setting time during the top-ten shootout.”
Fogg says with the present overcast, windy conditions and odd rain shower forecast to become wetter for Sunday’s racing, he doesn’t mind too much whether it rains or not.
“We’ll have a good battle on our hands either way – we’re in the best possible position on the front row with Holden driver Paul Manuell alongside going into Timaru’s right-left opening corner combination. It’s interesting – and good for the series – that Paul’s in second in a Commodore. It’s very close at the top and all we can do is put our best foot forward tomorrow. I’m looking for two race wins so let the battle begin!”
LG Motorsport’s young driver William Bamber also delivered a strong qualifying performance and will start Sunday’s first race from 13th – his best qualifying position to date in his debut NZV8 season.
Fogg commented: “William was running in the top ten for quite a while during the 20-minute session. He’s really enjoying the Timaru circuit and we’re delighted to see him start the LG-ZM Falcon from 13th tomorrow.
Fogg, Bamber and the LG Motorsport crew contest three races on Sunday, with the first starting at 10:00am. The second 12-lap race starts at 12:45pm before the 22-lap reverse grid race at 4:00pm.
