New Zealand moviegoers will be surprised to see one of their very own starring in a love story featuring in the 2011 French Film Festival!

New Zealand actor Marton Csokas is best-known to Kiwi audiences as Shortland Street’s Dr Leonard Dodds. He is also recognised for his roles in Bourne Supremacy and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. But in With love…From the Age of Reason, one of the films in the line-up of the fifth edition of the French Film Festival, he plays famous French actress Sophie Marceau’s love interest. Is this because New Zealand men have the same effect on French women as French men do on Kiwi ladies?!

With Love…From the Age of Reason is about the letter that Margaret (Sophie Marceau), a successful businesswoman, receives from her seven year-old-self on her fortieth birthday.

In 2010, Marton starred in another French movie entitled The Tree. This Christmas film coproduced by Australia and France was filmed in the small town of Boonah in Queensland and follows the lives of Dawn (played by another renowned French actress, Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her four children after the unexpected death of her husband Peter (Aden Young). One of Dawn’s children is convinced that her father speaks to her through the leaves of her favourite tree and he’s come back to protect them. But the new bond between mother and daughter is threatened when Dawn starts a relationship with George (Marton Csokas), the plumber, called in to remove the tree’s troublesome roots.

Perhaps Csokas’ command of the French language is the result of his love affair with French actress Eva Green which was sparked on the set of Kingdom of Heaven? Whatever the reason for his venture into the world of French cinematography, the result remains the same: The New Zealand actor is truly cultivating a name for himself in the French film industry!
