Shearer has record 600 in sight
Te Kuiti shearer Stacey Te Huia is eyeing the possibility of a new World eight-hour ewe-shearing record of around 600 after getting to the threequarter stage with 451 shorn, and no rejects.
Having opened the bid with 146 from 7am to 9am and followed with a run record of 152 in the next two hours to the lunchbreak at 11.30am, Te Huia has shorn 153 in the run after lunch, with half-hour splits of 38, 38, 38 and 39 between 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
Having started the day needing an average of 145 for each of the four t wo-hour runs, he needs just 128 in the last run from 3pm to 5pm to break the record, or 149 to hit 600.
The judges, including Australian Ralph Blue, are impressed with the standard of the shearing in the Moketenui woolshed between Te Kuiti and Benneydale, with no sheep rejected and a quality standard comfortably within the 12pt mark set by the World Sheep Shearing Records Society.
Rain continues outside but has not bothered the 30-year-old gun, who has also not been troubled by a forearm cut in the second run.
