Favourite Sporting Moment To Feature At Awards
Public Participation In Their ‘Favourite Sporting
Moment’ To Feature At 2010 Westpac Halberg Awards
Auckland, 01 December 2010 –
The choice of ‘New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment’ during 2010, decided by public vote, will be a feature of the Westpac Halberg Awards dinner next February.
A meeting of the Halberg Trust Executive Board this week gave the go-ahead for the new initiative, sponsored by SPARC, which they believe will serve to both stimulate greater public awareness of the work the Trust does in linking disabled people to sport and active leisure in their community, as well as engaging them more closely in New Zealand’s pre-eminent sporting awards.
“We know how much New Zealander’s care about their sport and each year the Westpac Halberg Awards generate considerable debate,” says Halberg Trust Chief Executive Steve Hall. He says the criteria for ‘New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment’ is “the most exciting, remarkable or compelling sporting moment, game or series during 2010 involving New Zealand sporting teams and individuals both at home and abroad.”
“Now with the ability to vote for ‘New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment’ we hope the public will take an even greater interest and ownership in the Westpac Halberg Awards, watch the live telecast on SKY Sport, and be inspired to attend the awards dinner in Auckland on Thursday, February 10, 2011.”
Mr Hall says in addition to the support of SPARC as the naming rights partner of ‘New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment’ the Halberg Trust has also been able to enlist the support of SKY Sport, the presenting partner of the live telecast of the awards on February 10, plus TRN through Radio Sport and Newstalk ZB and Fairfax Media, in promoting the new award to the public from January 1 next year up until the night of the awards.
SPARC Chief Executive Peter Miskimmin says SPARC is delighted to partner with the Halberg Trust in bringing together an award which he feels will capture the imagination of the New Zealand public.
“New Zealanders are passionate about sport and we all love to reflect on, and debate, our favourite sporting moments,” he says.
“SPARC invests in high performance sport because it excites and inspires the nation. This award celebrates those special moments. I think Kiwi sports fans will enjoy the opportunity to share their thoughts on the moments that excited and inspired them.”
Mr Hall says while some
details around the ‘Favourite Sporting Moment’ are still
awaiting confirmation it will involve.-
- Public voting
— both on-line through skysport.co.nz and by text
voting.
- The public selecting from up to 10 of the most
compelling and special sporting moments involving New
Zealand teams and individuals in 2010.
- The ‘Favourite
Sporting Moments’, bought to you by SPARC, will be chosen
by a selection panel comprised of representatives of the key
partners.
- Voting will open from 6pm on January 1 after
the Westpac Halberg Award finalists are announced.
- All
those voting will be eligible to win a prize.
- New
Zealand’s ‘Favourite Sporting Moment’ winner for 2010
will receive a miniature ‘Halberg’ on the night of the
awards like the other category award winners.
“There have been so many special sporting moments involving New Zealand sports men, women and teams this year, what with the Football World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, the World Rowing Championships, the Kiwis Four Nations triumph and the All Blacks Test successes, to name just a few,” says Mr Hall. “So we are confident New Zealanders will want to play their part in determining the outcome of this exciting award.”
