STOP, CHECK, GO.and have fun on our treasured islands this summer!

A series of island based concerts is set to raise awareness around our marine reserves and sanctuaries this summer. Urupukapuka Island in the Bay of Islands and Motutapu in the Hauraki Gulf will host a total of seven 'concerts for conservation'.

Both islands are now pest free due to major eradication programmes. Organisers of Live at the Islands are working closely with the Department of Conservation to ensure the message gets out to all visitors to take special care, as the islands provide a safe haven for many of our rarest and most endangered wildlife and plants.

"These concerts are a great way for us to inform the public about taking some simple precautions when visiting these protected locations" explains event organiser Jackie Sanders. "We need to leave pests and pets at home and check for stowaways such as rats, mice and ants in our bags or on our boats. Clean off any soil and weeds too from footwear"

"Remember just 3 simple rules. Before leaving the mainland, stop and check your gear for any unwanted hitch-hikers," continues Ms Sanders, "then go, have fun and enjoy some great music in a idyllic setting."

Live at the Islands presents some interesting logistical challenges. Every single piece of equipment such as staging, marquees and sound systems, as well as every vehicle, tool, even the ice-creams must undergo bio-security checks before being barged over. "It's a daunting undertaking but it will be worth it!" adds Ms Sanders.

Live at the Islands support local conservation projects Project Kiwi Care and Project Island Song in the Bay of Islands and The Motutapu Restoration Trust in Auckland. A portion of each ticket sold is donated to the programmes to assist with restoration work and species re-introduction.
