Former NZ women’s squash champion to fight against police in charity forces event

Former New Zealand women’s squash champion Sarah Cook has put away up her racket and slipped on her boxing gloves as she prepares for the forces fight for charity event in Christchurch on February 12.

The three times national champion and Commonwealth Games medallist has been asked to fight for the Fire Service in the 10-bouth contest against the police.

The event will raise money for Camp Quality, helping families who have a child suffering cancer; and Burn Support, for child burns victims and their families.

``I have been a qualified firefighter for 10 years. We have a lot of fun competitions against the police and we haven’t had great results to date so I was asked if I would be interested in doing something like this to help,’’ Cook said today after a session at the gym.

``I decided to do ahead because it seemed just the challenge I needed and it required a new skill set. The training is not too different from squash, fitness wise. So it has been great fun getting back skipping, hill sprints, circuits, sit-ups, and hitting the bags and pads until my arms just about fall off.

``Sometimes I wonder why I'm doing all this again as I thought I had finished all my years of hard training. I am starting to find that killer instinct again which has been lying dormant for a long time.
I have a ten year old son, Taylor, and he likes seeing his mum back training and is also quick to let me know when I'm not doing something right or not working hard enough.’’

The February 12 event at Cowles Stadium will feature appearances from other sport stars including former cricketer Shane Bond.
