World Champion Scottish Dancers To Perform At Hawke’s Bay Opera House.
Students from Julie Appleton-Seymour’s School of Dance based in Central Hawkes Bay, will be performing “An Evening of
Dance,” at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House on Monday the 6th December commencing at 7pm. Due to the Waipukurau Civic
Theatre’s movie schedule and reconstruction of the Waipawa Municipal Theatre, the school of dance will be hitting the
bright lights of Hastings to present its annual dance recital featuring a wide range of dance styles including Highland,
Irish, Ballet, Lyrical and Modern dancing. The Sticks and Drones Pipe Band will also be attending to present an item and
to welcome guest arriving to this strongly Scottish-based recital.
“While we’re disappointed to be let down by our local theatre, the pupils will make the most of their Opera House
experience. We hope that Hastings audiences, who may not have seen us perform, will come and enjoy our variety
concert-style dance recital” says the School’s Director, Julie Appleton-Seymour.
The school is one of the leading Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing dance schools in Australasia. It has a
number of very talented Highland dancing students who regularly compete at championships around the country and overseas
as well. The studio has for the past three years had a student become a World Champion title holder each year. Current
World Champion, Holly Keir, is the World Champion 11 year old. Student Abby-Jane Taylor, 12 years, has been a World
Champion in 2008 and 2009, and is currently the runner up to the World Champion in the 12 year old age group. The two
girls also took out the 1st and 2nd placings in the British Open Championship for dancers 12 years and under in Scotland
in August.
Earlier this year in Queensland, at the largest Highland Dancing competition held in Australasia, the bi-annual
“Champion of Champions of Australasia,” three dancers from this studio won all three championship titles for dancers
under the age of 13 years.
“We have been fortunate to gain an excellent international reputation and many people in dancing circles, now know about
a place in NZ called Hawkes Bay,” says Julie.
The Modern dance section of the studio, make up the largest number of pupils by far. Students in these classes are
taught a wide variety of dance styles, so they have a wider appreciation of many dance forms.

A free bus courtesy of Simon and Donna Keir of Plumbing Place, Waipukurau will run from Waipukurau to the Opera House on
recital night for all requiring transport. Transport and recital bookings can be made at the Waipukurau Information
Centre.
“It would be great to see Hastings theatre and dance patrons, support the school and provide the students with a full
audience”, encourages Julie.
