Parmenter Continues Unitec’s Strong Presence In Arts Foundation Laureate Awards

Renowned dancer and choreographer Michael Parmenter has continued Unitec Institute of Technology’s strong connection with the Arts Foundation Laureate.

Parmenter, an adjunct professor at Unitec’s Department of Performing and Screen Arts, is one of five recipients of this year’s Laureates.

“Of course I was thrilled to be selected along with the other fine artists
recognised this year,” says Parmenter.

“But it is also an honour to join that wonderful band of arts warriors who have received the Arts Laureate award over the years.”

The regular appearance of choreographers and dancers in the awards, is
recognition of the very important role dance plays in New Zealand’s cultural life, says Parmenter.

“Choreography, more than any other art form really is a collective activity.

“A choreographer is nothing without the support and complicity of managers,
designers, musicians and especially those extraordinary magicians the dancers,
so this award is a reconviction of all the creative artists who have joined me
in bringing dance into the world.”

The Laureate is awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to the arts industry and carries a $50,000 cheque for each recipient.

Parmenter has had a long association with Unitec’s dance programme and has choreographed one of the works for A Life Between Us that will be on show at the end of this month to celebrate the programme’s 21 years of existence.
He is currently in France where he is completing part of his doctorate studies.
Unitec dance programme leader, Charene Griggs, says Parmenter is a deserving recipient of the Laureate for all that he has achieved within the arts industry.
“Michael has raised the profile of contemporary dance not only in New Zealand but also on the international stage, which is a unique achievement and one that deserves to be recognised.”

Parmenter continues Unitec’s strong links with the Laureates after designer and master carver Lyonel Grant was named a recipient last year. Grant is the man behind Unitec’s impressive marae and continues to run carving workshops at Unitec.
