Return Of The Nutters' Club
Return Of The Nutters' Club
The Mental Health Foundation is proud to announce that following the success of the inaugural season of The Nutters Club on Maori TV, NZ On Air have pledged their continued support of the show funding a second 20-episode season.
The Nutters Club is hosted by comedian Mike King and psychiatrist Dr David Codyre, who talk candidly with a special guest each week about their personal experience of mental illness. Guests featured in the first season included former Shortland Street stars Nicola Kawana and Peter Elliott, fashion designer Denise L’Estrange-Corbet, Carterton mayor Gary McPhee and music legend Mike Chunn.
Seed funding for The Nutters Club was originally provided by the Mental Health Foundation through the Movember raised funding in 2008. Created as a talkback programme for RadioLIVE, the success of the radio show brought it to the attention of leading production company Top Shelf, who adapted the show for TV and created a 15 episodes season that was picked up by Maori TV.
“Mental health problems are common, research shows one in five New Zealanders in any one year are likely to be affected,” says Judi Clements, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation. “Through programmes such as The Nutters Club people are able to not only share their experiences but to also learn from and support each othr and see that mental health is something we can talk about
The Nutters Club approaches the subject of mental illness in a unique and informative way. Mike King, Dr David Codyre and their guests speak openly about their personal experiences and it is through this honesty that the show has been able to connect so well with its audience.
“It’s about life as it really is,” says King. “When you actually hear someone sharing their story and they openly admit to having problems and being flawed, you have a lightbulb moment. You start realising, hmmm, that sounds just like me.”
Shooting for season 2 will begin later in the year.
