Donated house sold for $100,000 at charity auction
A house built by the good will and generosity of community members and volunteer builders was auctioned for with 100% of
the money raised going to tow charities: the Prostate Cancer Foundation and West Auckland Hospice.
John Key attended the ribbon cutting at the unveiling of the finished home the day before and gave his full support to
the initiative, commending those that gave their time and supplies in tight economic times.
The three bedroom home took gold medal award winning builders, Allan Wallace and Tony Anderson, just 5 weeks to build.
All materials were supplied for free so that all the proceeds from the auction can go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation
and West Auckland Hospice. This was the key goal for the projects overseer, Neil Killgour, who coordinated more than 40
suppliers and trades people to make the initiative happen.
The auction was well attended with several serious bidders fuelling competition. Prior to bidding the West Auckland
Hospice treated attendees to Devonshire tea and scones and a sausage sizzle was roaring in full force.
Bidders were encouraged by the auctioneer to bid from their heart and not just their head, a sentiment that likely added
an extra $10,000 to the winning bid. Former All Black captain and Blue September Ambassador Stu Wilson was among those
in attendance supporting the cause.
Bidding started at the low price of $10,000 and went for $100,000, exceeding expecations.
Allan Wallace and Tony Anderson, the builders at the centre of the project were rapt with the outcome saying that being
able to give two cheques to two deserving charities is a great reward for all the time, hard work and generosity that
has gone into the project.
