New face joins star-studded team for CanTeen
A new talent has joined this year’s team of designers for the upcoming CanTeen Bandanna Challenge, world number nine surfer girl Paige Hareb.
Paige joins the ranks of other well-known CanTeen ambassadors who have returned with fresh bandanna designs this year; Dan Carter, Lisa Tamati, Maria Tutaia, Scott Dixon and Federation clothing.
Paige, who is currently ranked ninth in the world, and was 2009’s Taranaki Sportsperson of the Year, is CanTeen’s newest ambassador and the Bandanna Challenge, from October 16-31, will be her first.
She’s thrilled to be supporting the organization because of the work it does for people in her own age group.
“Even in the past couple of months I’ve known people that have had cancer- and it’s a thing you don’t want to see. Seeing them has made me want to help out and support CanTeen wherever I can,” Paige says.
The ten designers for this year’s bandanna challenge also include CanTeen patient member Samuel Gwynn, from Wellington, patient member Aeronwy Cording from Christchurch and bereaved sibling member Rachel Allan from Christchurch.
The bandanna is a symbol for CanTeen representing hope, courage and survival for an estimated 10,000-12,000 young people living with cancer in New Zealand. New Zealand recently ranked first equal with Australia as the countries where citizens are most likely to donate time and money in a survey done by the British-based Charities Aid Foundation.
CanTeen chief executive David Pearce says he hopes to see more New Zealanders’ “big hearts” continue throughout  the Bandanna Challenge, which is CanTeen’s biggest annual fundraising event.
“We don’t receive any government funding and the services we provide for these young people to help them cope are essential.
“Living with cancer is traumatic at any time, but even more so for young people already facing life changes, so we hope New Zealanders will dig deep to support our young people, says Mr Pearce.
The funky designs can be purchased for $4 during the two weeks of the challenge from PAK’n’SAVE, New World, Four Square, Farmers, BP, Repco, Burger King, Radius Pharmacy and ASB Bank outlets.
Bandannas can also be bought online at www.canteen.org.nz or at hundreds of participating schools throughout the country.
