Earthquake won’t stop bra quest!
Canterbury’s earthquake will not stop GirlGuiding New Zealand (NZ) from achieving its quest for the longest bra chain in the world by November this year.
GirlGuiding NZ’s national office is based in Christchurch and, despite some minor damage, it is still all go for November’s Guinness World Record of 200,000 bras, says Chief Executive Ruth Teasdale.
“We are determined to achieve the world’s longest bra chain, no matter what. It’s not just about a world record attempt but, as New Zealand’s largest female organisation, raising awareness of breast cancer,” she says.
There are more than 50,000 bras currently sitting in Dargaville, where the world record attempt was started by Dargaville Guide Leader Robyn Martinovich. A further huge number is on the way.
“We can do this with some help so dig out all of those unwanted bras. It doesn’t matter what condition they are in – and whether there’s one or one hundred!”
When the Bra Chain World Record attempt has been achieved all the highest quality bras will be sent to women in Africa, Haiti, the Pacific Islands or other countries as a way of giving back to women and girls overseas.
The current record is 166,000 bras achieved by the Australians.
Clothing store Postie and Bendon outlet stores are on board to support the campaign by collecting bras at their stores nationwide. People can also call GirlGuiding NZ on 0800 22 22 92 if they want the bras collected.
