'101 Dates' Costume to Feature in Cult Couture

COSTUME FROM 101 DATES TO FEATURE IN VILLA MARIA CULT-COUTURE SHOW

Two garments created by designer Caroline MacLeod selected to be in competition

September 28, 2010 – Wellington (NZ) - "The Butterfly Dress" designed by Caroline MacLeod and first featured in episode 4 of online comedy series 101 Dates is one of two pieces selected for the Villa Maria Cult-Couture Awards taking place on October 29th 2010 in Auckland.

MacLeod, who designed and created a total of 10 costumes for the series, has had two of her designs accepted in order to compete against fellow designers for the chance to win up to $15,000 in cash prizes.

The 29 year old spent 3 months this year teaching design and patternmaking in Uganda as part of the Open Arms Project. Prior to this, MacLeod studied a Bachelor of Design in Fashion at Massey University and first worked with 101 Dates director Chaz Harris on his short film The Shoe Box in 2007. Reacting to the news, Harris said “I’m incredibly proud of the work Caroline has done on this project and I’m thrilled to hear she is being recognised for it”.

101 Dates launched online in August and follows Alice Chapman, a young woman who takes her quest to find "the one" global through video dates on her webcam. The costume in question has been further enhanced since production wrapped in July and was designed for the supporting character of "Mary" who has an outlandish wardrobe partially inspired by music artist Lady Gaga. Describing her work on 101 Dates, MacLeod found it particularly exciting because “Mary’s costumes have been the most crazy I’ve ever made and it’s great to have that kind of challenge as a costume designer”.

Villa Maria Cult-Couture's new arena venue will feature a star-studded line-up set to prove that fashion and performance go hand-in-hand; J. Williams, Annie Crummer, Tina Cross, Jackie Clarke, Suzie Lynch and Taisha as the Ladykillers, Sola Rosa, and the newly crowned world hip hop champs ReQuest will all be performing.

Creative director Chantelle Whaiapu says that each year the show is based around a different theme, with the weird and wonderful world of the circus bringing its magical and fantastical flourishes to the stage this time round. “We’ve been inspired by the exotic world of the Cirque, where the bizarre and the extraordinary come to play.”

Villa Maria Cult-Couture is presented as part of the Manukau Festival of Arts 2010 and takes place at 8pm on 29 October at the Sir Woolf Fisher Arena, TelstraClear Pacific events centre, Manukau. Tickets are $15 each and available from www.ticketdirect.co.nz
