Age Concern Awareness Week starts tomorrow

The national organisation for older people will be using its annual Awareness Week, starting tomorrow, to showcase its work.

“We do our important work ‘serving the needs of older people’ with the support and involvement of local communities around the country,” Age Concern national president Liz Baxendine says.

“Age Concern Awareness Week is an opportunity for us to let people know what we can do for them, and – in return – how they can support their local Age Concern.

“We want to alert seniors, their friends, family and caregivers to the wide range of our services. It’s also an opportunity for volunteers who want to make a difference to join their local Age Concern.

“Each Age Concern is a not-for-profit registered charity,” Liz Baxendine says, “so donations, legacies and the support of community trusts are vital to us.”

Age Concern will use each day of the Awareness Week to focus on aspects of 'serving the needs of older people.”

Age Concerns around the country will be providing information on elder abuse and neglect prevention, alleviating loneliness, community connection, and health promotion.

Friday 1 October will feature celebrations of the International Day of Older Persons and the announcement in Wellington of Age Concern New Zealand’s second annual Patron's Award for the media. The award is given to reward and encourage positive depictions of older people and ageing in news, entertainment and advertising.

The main awareness week ends next Sunday, but special events will continue throughout October at various local Age Concerns.
