Return Of An “Idea”
Good Company
presents
THE IDEA OF AMERICA
by Sam
Shore
After its sell out run at The Basement earlier this year, Good Company is back with a new actor on board for a return season of the critically acclaimed; The Idea of America. Come and join the funny, touching and thoroughly engaging ride from November 10th.
“Witty, sexy, entertaining: yes” Theatreview
The Idea of America showcases the universal story of how a modern family copes with the loss of a parent, interweaved with the fantastical world of a stage diva gone mad! Created by Sam Shore, The Idea of America saw a number of distinguished artists help bring the play to life including Academy Award, and two time Emmy award, winning director Milton Justice. Sam Shore was lucky enough to work with Milton while he was in New Zealand; his professional eye helped Sam craft this work into a fast paced original piece of theatre. This season the volume is ramped up even further with the addition of Chelsie Preston Crayford, who joins the talented existing line-up of actors.
“Jude, a failed actress battling dementia, seems to think she's a lot more famous than she actually is. Between playing mother and battling with her illness, she escapes into a world of sequins, air-kisses and grand sweeping entrances. Amongst all this her conservative and bigoted daughter, Holly, returns to the fold. Youngest Maureen, and secretive older brother Sean, greet her warily. As things turn from bad to worse the comically dysfunctional siblings must unite in a common cause. Lies are exposed, old wounds reopened and each must struggle with their own off beat neuroses.
Having drawn on the strengths of two generations of New Zealand performance artists, the arrival of Preston Crayford further demonstrates how heavyweight of a production The Idea of America has become in such a short time – having been picked up both locally and internationally since its debut run in 2009. She joins award winning designer John Parker, recognized as one of our leading theatre designers, established playwright Gary Henderson and acclaimed actor, Go-Girls cast member, Michele Hine and a lineup of some of New Zealand’s finest up and coming talents, to create a captivatingly original portrayal of family life. One by one the seemingly mismatched individuals learn once more what it is to be family.
“This play is a testament to upcoming New Zealand talent. fun, fabulous, but also heart breakingly sad. I was blown away.” – Express
