Park Family To
Attend Battle Of Britian Service
Three great-great nephews and nieces of Kiwi Battle of Britain hero Sir Keith Park will attend the National Commemorative Service marking the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain in Wellington tomorrow (Wednesday, 15th September).
The three family members, Jason Kirk, Steve Hawkins and Jo Wickham, will represent the wider Park family who are in London this week for the unveiling of the permanent bronze statue of Sir Keith Park.
Jason Kirk said he was unable to attend the London unveiling but was honoured to be representing the family in Wellington.
“As a family we’ve always been very proud of Uncle Keith and his achievements. It’s amazing that a permanent memorial will be installed in the city that he committed his all to defend, and that the role he played in winning the Battle of Britain will be recognised during the 70th anniversary commemorations, both here and in London. We’re very grateful to the Sir Keith Park Memorial Campaign for the work they have done over the last three years to see his remarkable legacy honoured”, said Kirk.
Prime Minister John Key announced last week he
had cancelled his plans to attend the unveiling due to the
Christchurch earthquake. Minister of Defence, Dr Wayne
Mapp will be attending the unveiling in the Prime Ministers
place.
