Yoga and meditation students and teachers from Wellington will join with thousands across the globe in a celebration of the United Nation's International Peace Day. They’ll be celebrating connection, peace and fun by taking part in 108 sun salutations, or 108 ‘Aum’ chants, or simply sharing the space through meditation or music.
“There was a large turnout for last year's Global Mala at Capital E,” says event organiser and MYOGA teacher, Melissa Billington, “and this year we’re holding the event outside so it’s more open to the community and so people passing by can join in. All levels of experience are welcome and it’ll be a good opportunity, if you’re new to yoga, to see what it's all about; we’ll have teachers from several schools leading practice, as well as special practice areas for kids and those who want to move more slowly. There’ll be contributions from the broader community, including food, eco-products and art-work, musicians leading mantra, and guided meditation. Our aim is to make yoga more visible in Wellington & set an atmosphere of participation & community.”
The Global Mala takes it's name from from the sacred string of prayer beads, which is used as a guide for meditation in India and Tibet. Composed of 108 beads, the mala is symbolic of a prayer for peace, encircling our one planet.
"The number 108 has long been a number of significance in India, the birthplace of yoga, as well as in other countries & traditions", says Melissa, "and it's why on September 19th the Global Mala will be offering 108 repetitions of practice. It's an opportunity for yoga communities around the world to come together in unified practice, and remind us that regardless of culture or tradition, at heart, we are all essentially the same".
The Mala will officially commence at
1.30pm but the space will be available for set-up from 1pm
onward. Participants are encouraged to bring yoga mats,
sunscreen and water, aswell as a willing body and a strong
voice!
All money raised will go to the Yoga in Prisons
Trust, a NZ-based organisation of volunteer yoga teachers
who teach yoga and meditation to prisoners.
