BackLit Productions present
‘The Hungry Attic’ at two New Zealand dance
festivals
Cementing their place at the forefront of innovative dance in New Zealand, award-winning dance company BackLit Productions have been invited to perform their latest dance creation ‘The Hungry Attic’ at two of New Zealand’s best dance festivals – The Tempo Festival in Auckland and The Body Festival in Christchurch.
BackLit Productions are a vibrant contemporary New Zealand dance company with a strong stylistic approach to dance. Since 2005 the company has continually performed works that are diverse, stimulating, humorous and at times dark, forming an outstanding reputation for fusing virtuoso performances with stunning visual elements.
‘The Hungry Attic’ is set in a dusty and hauntingly mesmeric ‘Attic’, a place where memories are left to turn to dust and entrapment is inevitible. As the audience are led deeper into the realm of the Attic, memories are unpacked and the characters within come to life. Expressed in the company’s unique theatrical dance language and danced by seven women this show incorporates dynamic performance, beautiful imagery and social-commentary in an entertaining and visually striking show.
Based in Auckland, BackLit Productions have performed six evening length shows to date in both Wellington and Auckland, however this festival tour sees the company venture to the South Island for the first time. BackLit has strong links with the South Island as three of the company members are originally from Christchurch and one is from Invercargill.
Co-founder of BackLit and Producer of ‘The Hungry
Attic’ Lucy Miles says:
“BackLit as a company are
extremely excited by the opportunity to perform at both of
the dance festivals. We are overjoyed that our
long-standing aim to take our work to Christchurch has
finally come to fruition. The Hungry Attic is our best show
yet and we are relishing the opportunity to re-present this
work to new audiences. ”
Another first for the company is the inclusion of new dance talent. Amy Mauvan and Serene Lorimer join the company for the two seasons of the The Hungry Attic along with understudy Kate Bartlett. All are graduates from the Unitec dance program in Auckland.
The Hungry Attic
A place where memories
are lost and possessions are left to turn to
dust.
BackLit Productions opens the
shutters and sheds light onto a magical world, pitching
light against dark and good versus evil.
Let
yourself be taken on an excursion in a collaborative dance
event that brings you rousing dance, wit and class, a dash
of politics and striking imagery
“….a sensitive,
mystery-filled evening of dance…..a must see
event.”
