Mystery and tension at Blue Oyster

Mystery and tension combine in three parts to create an immersive environment at the Blue Oyster Art Project Space in September.

The artist collective ffffff is staging Introduced Birds, which looks at the creation of social spaces and social order.

The first work will be ‘Storm Shelter’ – a sound installation constructed from cut and faceted vinyl records. The large space created will look something like fractured terrain. The work is interactive, and visitors are invited to touch the needle of a record player's tone arm to hear the sound of their touch being amplified and transmuted, investigating the idea of action and reaction within social structures, identity and human interactions.

The next gallery will be transformed with a cluster of hollow geometric forms, which blend into the white gallery walls and mimic the odd angles of the space. Audience members can crawl into these structures, which are places for retreat but also become claustrophobic.

The lower gallery will be displaying photos taken from various schools and disused children’s homes from around New Zealand. Opening night will see one member of the collective filling the room with the dirt from these sites adding a performance element to the work.
